During our Sunday church services, we have a time dedicated for the children to attend small group and large group classes (we call it Primary). This past Sunday, the children's group leader asked Evy to share some of his serving stories during the large group class called "Sharing Time."
Evy and I spoke briefly the day before on what he wanted to share. We printed a couple of pictures and were ready. He did such a great job of talking about what we did for a neighbor and what we did for Captain Hope's Kids.
The children in that room were so quiet as Evy explained what he did. (He and I did it in a Q and A style. That helps overcome the shyness that can happen in speaking in front of people.)
Along with sharing with the children the importance of serving, the Sharing Time Leader took the idea of serving others straight to the rest of the kids. She had them draw and write nice notes on squares of paper. The children made notes that were going to be placed on the cars in the parking lot.
She then issued a Service Scavenger Hunt Challenge. She challenged each child to earn a 100 points during the week doing service. My boys are pumped and so excited about getting that Service Scavenger Hunt going!
One of the main reasons why I wanted to share this is what happened at the end of our church services: we arrived at our cars and discovered the sweet pictures and notes that had been left on our windshields. My oldest even looked through his window to watch when others found their notes! For my boys, service is particularly powerful when they see how what they have done helps others, even if it just makes the other person laugh or smile.
