As usual for a Texas summer, it has been hot! Yesterday, at the elementary school dismissal, the staff making sure that kids were getting safely home were melting in the heat, just melting!
This morning, I grabbed 10 waters and put them in the fridge to cool. Later in the day, my youngest son and I packed them into a cooler and left for pick-up a few minutes early. (Admittedly, I did label them with a sticker that said www.penniesoftime.blogspot.com . . . well, because, I want as many people to join in as possible! I need ideas!)
Note: The temperature on the car's thermometer read 105 degrees.
The first recipient on the trek of water delivery was the crossing guard. That man smiled so big and said thank you so profusely that it was the first thing my three year old wanted to share with his dad several hours later this evening. When we offered the water to people, the first response was disbelief and then utter delight! The boys wanted to RUN to the next person to get that smile again (and hug from a teacher or two)!
The boys had so much fun! Serving can be fun! Whaaaa?! In all, we handed out 6 waters to staff (we did walk around the school to find as many staff members as possible) and another 4 or so to kids that looked really awful sitting in the heat waiting for their ride home.
Here is where you imagine a picture of sweaty, red-faced, smiling people holding cold water bottles in their hands. Frankly, I was too hot and sweaty to get the camera in action for this one!
In all, a complete success! Short, sweet, and totally fun!
What "pennies of time" ideas do you have for children trying to help school staff? What "pennies of time" adventures have you completed in schools?
Love this story. I will be contributing one soon. What's the best way to share my own experience with the group?
