Magic Moment from Pennies of Time
We have been doing daily acts of service for 9 months now. Today, I wanted my boys to take a chance and share with Penny's family (the inspiration for this blog) what it meant to them to serve or what service is to them.
I sat down with each of my boys and asked them to share by making a card to send to Penny's family.
My older son got right to work writing each word out with such deliberation. Writing is a new skill for him, and he is very concerned with getting it just right. He would pause in his writing to clarify that he was using the right word.
"Serving is helping. It is helping all kinds of people. My favorite type of serving is to help those like the people in Oklahoma. I like to help old people, sick people, and just people who might be sad. I like serving. That is all I have to say about it today." :)
That left me to have a conversation with my 4 year old. I asked him what he wanted to tell Penny's family.
He isn't much of a talker. He prefers movement and sound effects. I thought I would get,"Serving is good. The End." And, yeah, that is what I thought we would get. This is what he said for me to write on the card:
"Service is helping, serving, and cleaning up the creek."
"Is there anything else?" I thought that was amazing but wanted to give him a full chance to talk. And, then, he just started sharing and sharing.
"I like to open doors for people and tell them about Penny and Penny of Time. . . . (pause) . . . Serving is saying,'I love you, Mommy and Daddy.' . . . (pause) . . . I love giving treats to the police. . . . (pause) . . . I like to help my dad working."
"Anything else you want to tell them?" I thought he was done. That was so much for him to share!
"I like a Penny of Time."
It warmed my heart to hear the connections that he was making with serving, helping people, and with being able to express himself! I sat back in awe at how he was able to articulate things about serving that had meaning for him!
He then drew an amazing flower on the card (upside-down and not on the typical "front of the card"---you get the idea) . . . he colored the flower and said: Mom, this flower is for Penny's mom. It will make her heart feel good.
For me, that was pure magic.
